The Slippery Rock Student Government Association held their second town hall meeting of the semester on Thursday at 5 p.m. at the Smith Student Center Theater to address mental health.
With a tray of cookies as well as healthy alternatives and beverages, SGA made an otherwise somber atmosphere as welcoming as they possibly could. The session began by members passing out a schedule that highlights events happening from November 7th until November 16th concerning mental health awareness.
As the crowd settled into the theater, a member of SGA introduced a website called Slido, which encouraged the audience to ask anonymous questions if they felt too uncomfortable asking in front of the crowd.
Speaker of the senate Joey Sciuto went on to take the podium and introduce a panel which included six individuals who represented Residence Life, Student Health Services, athletics, as well as disability services.
The discussion began with some pre-made questions to ease into the conversation of mental health. These questions were a bit more broad, covering student athletes, residence life, and how the counseling center has improved since last school year.
Shortly thereafter, Sciuto opened up the conversation to the audience who had any remaining questions, as well as tackling the highest liked Slido questions on the projector behind the panelists.
With each passing question, anybody on the panel or even in the audience who felt comfortable enough to answer would be more than welcomed to. Some of the questions asked had to do with the University reducing the stigma of mental illness, the University's response to three student suicides, as well as if Slippery Rock University's faculty receive training.
Only scheduled to run from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., SGA and its panelists had no issue with staying and answering any question a student, faculty member, or community member had. The town hall displayed Slippery Rock University's emphasis on tackling mental health awareness, and answered several more questions from the audience, ranging from light to heavy topics.
